Matala filter media rounds are 6" thick rolls, perfect "drop in" media for vortex filters, barrel filters and skimmers. With the same qualities as Matala sheets, Matala rounds are formed into coiled, pre-cut cartridges. Matala rounds will naturally wedge into place without need for support. Measure carefully and select the diameter you need. A loose fit will allow water and debris to flow around it. Do not cut or un-roll Matala coils. Using four sequential densities (black, green, blue, grey) can achieve maximum solids and biological filtration. Pads can be used in upflow filters as well -- simply invert the order, placing black at the bottom and grey at the top.
  • Tremendous potential to trap dirt, yet is super easy to clean
  • Can be sprayed clean by garden hose
Black Matala - Low Density
Black Matala is used for filtering the largest dirt particles. Black Matala is 6" thick, so it is surprising how much dirt it can trap! Can be used as a support grate for other layers of media due to its very sturdy and open design. In a settling chamber, Black Matala slows down and traps large particles and hair algae. Black Matala can also function as biological filtration with its high surface area.

Green Matala - Medium Density
Green Matala is used for filtering medium particles and can be cleaned out very easily by simply shaking out the filter media or spraying down with a garden hose. Green Matala makes a good biofilter, providing surface area with open spaces for good, aerated water flow.

Blue Matala - High Density
Blue Matala is used for filtering smaller particles, while still maintaining good flow distribution. Blue Matala is a superb biological filter media, due to its high available surface area and open passageways that allow nitrifying bacteria to thrive. Blue Matala is commonly used where one Matala pad is desired.

Grey Matala - Super High Density
Grey Matala filters out the smallest particles, while still maintaining good flow distribution. Grey Matala should be used as a final stage in the filter flow. Grey Matala should be used as a high efficiency biological filter media, due to its very high available surface area. Nitrifying bacteria thrive on Grey Matala.
